Asphalt shingles are the go-to roofing material for the majority of San Diego homeowners, offering a strong combination of affordability, ease of installation, and broad style options. They come in a range of colors and profiles to complement virtually any architectural style, from ranch homes to craftsman bungalows. Modern laminate (architectural) shingles have significantly improved over the three-tab shingles of the past, delivering better wind resistance and a richer dimensional appearance.
The honest trade-offs for asphalt shingles roofing.
Well-suited to San Diego's dry Mediterranean climate. The low humidity and mild temperatures minimize algae growth and granule degradation. However, coastal areas with marine layer and salt air can accelerate weathering — algae-resistant (AR) shingles are recommended for properties within a mile of the coast. Not a fire-rated choice for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones in East County or hillside communities.
Different varieties of asphalt shingles — each with its own cost and performance profile.
The original flat-profile asphalt shingle, cut with two slots to create three uniform tabs. Very affordable but offers minimal wind resistance (typically rated to 60–70 mph) and a thinner, less dimensional look. Largely being phased out in favor of architectural shingles.
The modern standard. Two layers of fiberglass mat are bonded together to create a thicker shingle with a dimensional, wood-shake-like appearance. Wind ratings of 110–130 mph are common, and most carry a 30-year manufacturer warranty. This is the most cost-effective upgrade from 3-tab.
Premium laminate shingles engineered to mimic the look of slate or hand-split wood shake. Heavier, thicker, and often rated Class 4 impact-resistant. Lifespan can reach 30–50 years. Price approaches the lower end of metal roofing but delivers a high-end aesthetic without the structural demands of real slate.
Inspect annually for lifted, cracked, or missing shingles, especially after Santa Ana wind events. Clear debris from valleys and gutters twice a year. Re-seal any exposed nail heads. Plan for full replacement around the 20-year mark if granule loss becomes significant.
